“Small family must for economic well being”

Staff Reporter

World Population Day observed in Karur district

NGOs, SHGs must work to contain population explosion

Efforts in Karur have paid rich dividends: Collector

KARUR: By 2011, the population of Karur district is expected to touch 11 lakh, going up from the estimated 10.10 lakh at present. According to the 2001 census, the district has a population of 9.31 lakh. It is imperative that efforts are made to popularise the message of having a small family for economic and social well being, Collector T.N. Venkatesh has said.

Participating in World Population Day celebrations here on Wednesday, he said early marriage affected young girls psychologically and physiologically. Hence, students should help to propagate the need to avoid early marriage for girls, especially in rural areas. Also, increased population meant that the available resources would have to be shared by more people. Government welfare measures would also meet the same fate.

The role of non-governmental organisations, service organisations, women self-help group members was significant, as much as the Government’s, in containing population explosion.

In Karur district, the average age of marriage for women was 21.5. Efforts to prevent the practice of child marriages had paid rich dividends resulting in the average age of marriage going up significantly, Mr. Venkatesh said.

On the occasion of World Population Day, the masses should renew their pledge to contain the burgeoning population and take the message to all corners, the Collector added. He administered a special population awareness pledge on the occasion.

Prizes distributed

He distributed prizes to winners of elocution competitions for school and college students. V. Latha, S. Jagadeesan and M. Indra, all from the Thanthonrimalai Government Arts College, K. Sasikala, G. Gouthami and S. Suganthi, all from Government Higher Secondary School, Thanthonrimalai, were the winners.

Joint Director of Health Services K. Saraswathi and other officials were among those who participated in the programme.
