KOCHI: Maple Foods Limited, Tokyo, a leading importer of Indian seafood, plans to buy Indian tuna-based products. President of Maple Foods Tetsuji Totsune has promised full cooperation of the company in developing the tuna industry in India, said a press release from Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) here on Thursday. He was speaking at a training programme organised by the MPEDA to impart skills to the Indian exporters in processing tuna products. Kuruvilla Thomas, marketing director at MPEDA, said Indian tuna exports had grown 88 per cent to Rs. 130 crore. This was expected to go up to Rs. 200 crore this financial year, he said. Indian tuna is exported mostly in whole frozen form. India has now started exporting sashimi grade tuna. While exporting sashimi grade tuna, about 50 per cent of the tuna meat goes waste. Value-addition
The MPEDA and Maple Foods have joined hands to convert this portion of meat into value-added products such as tuna croquette, tuna jerky, tuna pate, tuna roast and sausage, which have a huge market in Japan, said the press release.
