Double murder: police disclosure hurts family

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Three days after his son and mother were killed under mysterious circumstances at his government quarter here, Kunja Behari Pani is yet to overcome the shock.

But his agony has multiplied every time he hears people talking about the reason given by the police about the murder. Inconsolable, Mr. Pani on Thursday said that the police jumped to the conclusion by branding his son a gay on the basis of a confession made by the accused person and announced it to the media. “This has severely damaged my family’s image,” he said.

The family members met Deputy Inspector-General of Police Y.B. Khurania expressing their “strong displeasure” over the way the police acted and sought proper investigation into the matter. Mr. Pani’s only son Debabrata, 22, and mother Heena, 78, were killed by Arun Dora. Mr. Pani, his wife and youngest daughter were away on a pilgrimage when the murder was committed. “When we reached Bhubaneswar cutting short our visit, everybody is giving us an unusual glance,” said Lilima Pani, youngest sister of the victim.

“I don’t know who killed my brother and grandmother. But the way the police dealt the issue is really shocking. They have concluded within that a person who surrendered and confessed to the crime is speaking the truth,” Ms. Lilima said.

On Wednesday, the family members squatted on the road seeking proper investigation into the matter. “We believe there are more than one person involved in the crime. All should be brought under the purview of investigation,” she said.
