OREDA submits detailed project report to ministry concerned
BHUBANESWAR: Taking a big leap forward to exploit wind energy, the Orissa Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) will soon come up with a demonstrative two MW capacity wind power generation unit at the industrial town of Daman Jodi in Koraput district. “We have already submitted the detailed project report to Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This would be the first project in the State to get power generated through wind,” Chief Executive of OREDA AjitBharthuar told reporters here on Thursday. An investment to the tune of Rs. 6 crore was expected to be made in the project, said Mr. Bharthuar. National Aluminum Company had its given consent to provide some area under its occupation for the purpose and a final discussion with company authorities would be held soon, he said. The OREDA had assessed that wind speed at the place identified in Daman Jodi for putting up the demonstrative unit was measured to be at 280 watt per square metre (WSM) which was well above the minimum requirement of 250 WSM. The nodal agency for exploring renewable energy source in the State had identified six places where wind speed was above 250 WSM. The places are Gopalpur and Chhatrapur in Ganjam district, Chandipur in Balasore, Paradip in Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Daman Jodi. Huge potential
Chandipur has the huge potential to exploit the natural resources as the place is assessed to have wind speed reaching 316 WSM. OREDA sources said the organisation was working on assessing the situation at another eight places. “The State has a potential to generate 1700 MW power through wind energy,” Mr. Bharthuar said. Moreover, OREDA was eyeing at huge business through the sector. “We have already been offered to trade Certified Emission Reductions (CER) under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to be gained from the unit,” the Chief Executive said. Besides, OREDA was in process of bundling all renewable energy units, mainly biogas plants to enter the CDM trade. So fare the agency has helped construction of 2 lakh biogas plants, 21 lakh improved chullahs and two hydropower projects.
