A telegram fetches an engineering seat

S. Mohamed Imranullah

Telegram addressed to the Registrar of the

High Court Bench

Judge orders to take it up as a suo motu writ petition under Article 226

MADURAI: A telegram sent by M. Muthusamy of Andipatti in Theni district to Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has secured an engineering seat for his daughter.

The telegram addressed to the Registrar of the Bench read: “My daughter M. Narmatha has been selected to B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) degree course at Bharath Niketan Engineering College, Andipatti, through counselling process by Anna University. The Counselling Secretary advised me to pay only Rs.32,500 but the above college demanded to pay Rs.55,000 excluding Rs.5000 already paid. (Otherwise,) the college denied admission to my daughter to the course… Please take necessary action.”

The Registrar submitted the telegram before Justice Prafulla Kumar Misra, the senior most Judge in the Bench, who ordered to take it up as a suo motu writ petition under Article 226 of the Constitution.

The Higher Education Secretary, Anna University and the Principal of the engineering college were included as respondents.

Enquiry sought

The prayer read that the High Court may direct the college to admit the petitioner’s daughter by receiving Government prescribed fees and a consequential direction to the Education Secretary to conduct an enquiry on the issue.

The matter was placed before Justice K. Chandru for hearing. The Judge directed the Government Advocate to take notice on behalf of the Secretary and adjourned the matter by four weeks.

Fiat to college

In the meantime, the college was ordered to admit the girl in the course and report compliance to the court.

The Registry was also asked to send a copy of the interim order to the petitioner’s postal address.

Finally, a case filed through a telegram ended in an order copy sent home by post.
