There is a rare unanimity among political parties when the heat is on.
As the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) started cracking the whip against erring hotels and other commercial establishments for lack of parking provisions on High Court’s prodding, top politicians of the main parties in the State vied with each other to help those in the dock. The spectacle of some of these politicians opening the hotel shutters soon after they were closed was telling. While those in the opposition came out in the open, the ruling party’s big men and powerful bureaucrats badgered the officials concerned on the mobile phones forcing a hasty retreat in some cases.
“We did not receive a single call or a representation when we had to remove all the kiosks and LIDCAP shops belonging to the poor on roadsides during widening. Now every one is rushing to the rescue of the commercial business managements,” remarked an official. Incidentally, it has been decided to allow such kiosks wherever possible.
