CHENNAI: The Department of Posts is conducting a letter writing competition for school students in the city, a press release said. The competition is aimed at inculcating the habit of letter writing, which has gone down of late, in students. The release said the practice of writing letters was widely prevalent in earlier generations. Many people preserve letters from their parents or children as they enable them to emotionally relive moments that took place years ago. However, the advent of e-mail and SMS has led to a decline in the practice of writing letters. Though these technological advancements do help in speeding up communication, a personal element is still best given through a letter. The competition is being held at two levels: for juniors and seniors. Students can write the letters at their leisure and post it before September 30. The participants are required to write the letter on an Inland Letter Card (ILC) in their handwriting. Letters can be written in either English or Tamil. There are five topics to choose from for participants in each level. Students can write on any number of topics, each on a separate ILC giving their name, class and section, as well as the name of their school and address. The letters should be sent by post to reach The Director (Mail Business), First Floor, Greams Road. The best letter writers will be selected by a committee, and will be awarded prizes in October. The prizes include eight bicycles, four electronic keyboards, and several consolation prizes. For details, visit www.tamilnadupost.nic.in or call 9382814253, 9383472266 or 9444486595.
