NEW DELHI: To felicitate the 12 teachers from Orissa who were honoured by the President on Teachers’ Day, a get-together was organised by the resident Oriya diaspora at Karnataka Bhavan here on Thursday. The function was attended by Commissioner of Income Tax P. K. Das and Bishnu Narayan Mahapatra of the Ford Foundation among others. The highlight of the function was the teachers’ narration of their individual experiences. Tirlochan Bag, headmaster of a primary school in Kalahandi district, said: “There was a tribal boy in my school who was a very good student but he stopped coming to school. I took up the matter and explained things to his illiterate father who chased me away with a ‘lathi’ at first and accused me of misguiding his son. Now I feel proud since he has completed matriculation and taken admission in a college.” Another awardee, Anil Chandra Das, described how he started the first school in a remote region of Koraput district in a blacksmith’s workshop that was lying vacant. Now the school boasts its own building and library. The teachers also discussed laxity in supervision of schools by the authorities and overburdening of teachers with mid-day meal scheme work.
