MADURAI: Traffic management, one of the biggest challenges for law enforcing agencies in Madurai, is set to go live with the Commissioner of Police, K. Nandabalan, hinting at installing speed-dome cameras at important junctions.

At a high-level meeting held here on Wednesday, Mr. Nandabalan said that the Rs.4-crore project was likely to take shape in six months. The system that was successfully tried out in Tiruchi would not only ease congestion, but also help in crime detection. “We are working towards the concept of virtual policing. A database has to be created with the details of all registered vehicles. Traffic control monitors will be established at the Commissionerate and the police control room,” he said.

Continuous recording

The Collector, S.S. Jawahar, who participated in the meeting, said that the speed-dome cameras would facilitate continuous recording that would be transmitted to the server with the help of ‘Wi-Fi’ technology.

Camera surveillance

A team from the city police would visit Tiruchi to study traffic management through camera surveillance. “The police will have information of all vehicles that pass through junctions where cameras are installed,” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), S. Prabhakaran, top officials from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Highways Department and Corporation took part in the discussion.
