Minister proposes new flyover at Pragati Maidan

Staff Reporter

Walia inspects Ring Road and seven ongoing projects

NEW DELHI: To ease traffic congestion around Pragati Maidan, Delhi Urban Development and PWD Minister A.K. Walia on Thursday suggested construction of a trumpet and a half-bridge at the Bhairon Mandir crossing to the Engineer-in-Chief of the PWD. He said the move would make the crossing signal-free and provide relief to people who are visiting or passing by Pragati Maidan.

Dr. Walia inspected Ring Road and seven ongoing flying projects during the day and urged the PWD to speed up their construction so that Delhi is prepared for hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010 much ahead of the event.

He said the PWD role was important in this aspect as it is at present constructing 17 flyovers in Delhi.

The Minister visited the flyovers at Mukarba Chowk, Azadpur, Mangolpuri, Munirka, JNU, Rao Tula Ram Marg and Naraina and called upon officials to take urgent steps to overcome delays in the construction work at JNU, Munirka and Rao Tula Ram Marg. Timely completion of projects was also essential to prevent any escalation in costs, he said.

Stating that the Delhi Government was coming up with a number of infrastructure projects to overcome traffic congestion and provide relief to vehicular traffic, the Minister said he would also personally inspect the remaining 10 ongoing flyover projects to assess their progress.

Dr. Walia also expressed displeasure over poor maintenance of the road from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Rao Tula Ram Marg. He said he would take up the matter of debris lying on this road, which is also full of potholes, with the National Highway Authority of India. This road, he said, is also used by a large number of foreigners and VIPs.
