DANGEROUS stretch: The pothole-ridden GST Road near MIT Bridge in Chromepet was the spot where a man and his seven-year-old son were killed in a road accident on Thursday morning.

TAMBARAM: A man and his seven-year-old son were run over by an omni bus on Grand Southern Trunk near MIT Bridge, Chromepet on Thursday morning.

Travelling on a motorcycle, the victims fell on the road after hitting one of the many potholes on this stretch. Even before the man could get back on his feet to save his son, they came under the wheels of the bus.

Venkatesan, working in a private company, was a resident of Devanaidu Street, Saidapet. Along with his wife, Sasikala and their two children, he had gone to Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai district on Wednesday to attend a marriage. While his wife and their daughter came by bus, he returned to Chennai on Thursday morning on a motorcycle along with his son, Santhosh.

Near the MIT Bridge in Chromepet, police had placed a couple of barricades ahead of a pedestrian crossing to check over-speeding.

The motorcycle hit the pothole when Venkatesan negotiated the first barricade. In the impact, Venkatesan and his son, seated on the pillion, were thrown off the vehicle.

Eye-witnesses said Venkatesan tried to get back on his feet in an attempt to rescue his son. The omni bus, on its way to Koyambedu, was travelling at a great speed and its driver was unable to bring it to a sudden halt. Santhosh and his father were killed instantly, as a large number of pedestrians, motorists, waiting commuters at the bus stop, traders and residents of Chromepet watched the tragic accident that took place at 7.45 a.m.

The bodies were taken to Chromepet GH.

Driver arrested

The driver of the omni bus was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving.

Chromepet residents said MIT Bridge had turned into a highly dangerous zone and more than a dozen people were killed in accidents so far this year. Had proper maintenance been carried out on this road, Thursday morning’s accident could have been avoided, agitated residents said.

‘Maintained regularly’

Officials of the Chennai City Roads Division of the State Highways Department said they were carrying out regular maintenance works on GST Road between Kathipara and Irumbuliyur.

They faced problems in Kathipara, Meenambakkam and Chromepet more than anywhere else.

There are plans to strengthen the stretch of GST Road near MIT Bridge, including paving the carriageway with concrete in some of the intensively damaged spots.

Tenders for carrying out repair works to the tune of Rs. 80 lakh have been floated and work would commence shortly, they said.
