CHENNAI: The Madras University Staff Association celebrated Staff Day as part of the university’s 150 year celebrations on Thursday. Former staff of the university was honoured by Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran and Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy.

Mr. Veerasamy recalled that he was nominated to the university’s Senate as representative of the Legislative Assembly twice. Government employees had played a crucial role in the election of the current Government. These employees were vital in carrying out development projects, he said.

He expressed concern that men might be left behind, as compared to the rapid progress women were making in various fields. “We do not want men to sit at home and cook. Men and women should progress equally in all fields,” he said.

The Government has made efforts to take the Information Technology park concept to various districts to provide more employment. Lack of employment was a contributing factor to the genesis of the Naxalite movement, he said.

Dr. Ramachandran thanked the staff for having stood by him for the space of the year that he has held his post so far.

V.S. Kamalakannan, president of the association, put forward the demand that Tamil Nadu Open University be unified with Madras University.
