Dig Vijay in two finals

CHENNAI: Dig Vijay Singh will feature in both the Under-16 and Under-14 boys’ finals while in the girls’ section the title round matches in both categories will have the same set of contestants on Friday in the Good Earth super series tennis tournament 2007 being held at the SDAT Nungambakkam stadium.

Dig Vijay will play Saurabh Singh in the Under-16 final while local boy Mohit Mayur will challenge him in the Under-14 section. Ankita Raina and Sharan Paul will play the final in the two age categories in the girls section.

Boys: U-16: Semifinals: Dig Vijay Singh bt Chetan Pandit 6-3, 7-5; Saurabh Singh bt Mohit Mayur 6-4, 7-6(6); Quarterfinals: Dig Vijay Singh bt Siddarth Rawat 6-3, 7-6(6); Mohit Mayur bt Irfan Husain 6-2, 1-6, 6-2; Ch etan Pandit bt Gugan Verma 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4; Saurabh Singh bt Abhisek 6-3, 6-4; U-14: Semifinals: Mohit Mayur bt Pradeep Reddy 6-3, 6-2; Dig Vijay Singh bt Ram Kumar 6-3, 6-3.

Girls: U-16: Semifinals: Ankita Raina bt Natasha Palha 6-1, 6-1; Sharan Paul bt Pooja Narayana 6-3, 6-3; U-14: Semifinals: Ankita Raina bt Natasha Palha 6-2, 7-6(4); Sharan Paul bt C.H. Nidhi 6-1, 6-3.
Title shared

City I and City III shared the under-19 TNCA round-robin city cricket title after the teams were tied on the first innings in the two-day final played here.

Off-spinner J. Joel Joseph took five for 49 to reduce City III to 131 for eight, but M. Guhan struck an unbeaten 49 and helped add 63 runs for the last two wickets as City III drew level. R. Prashant top-scored with a 164-ball 55.

The scores:

City I 194 drew with City III 194 in 90 overs (R. Prashant 55, M. Guhan 49 n.o., J. Joel Joseph five for 49).
Sanjay takes title

R. Sanjay (+2 points) was the gold division winner of the Golf Cup at the Madras Gymkhana Golf Annexe, recently. H.K. Sinha (0 points) was the runner-up.

Vishes Sachdev (+2 points) finished on top in the silver division, with Nandakumar (+2 points) finishing second.
Loyola triumphs

Loyola College defeated Presidency 42-31 in the final of the Madras University inter-zonal kabaddi tournament held here recently.
Chess tournament

The Madras YMCA will conduct an open chess tournament for children (u-8, u-10, and u-12) on September 29.

The entry fee is Rs. 50, and the first 200 entries before September 27 will be accepted. Call Daniel Alagesan (24894077) of YMCA Kodambakkam for details.
Cycle race

The Chennai district unit of the SDAT proposes to conduct the ‘Anna birthday cycle race’ on September 15 at the Nehru stadium at 7 a.m.

The race will be conducted in two categories — under-17 and under-14 boys and girls (school students only). Prizes and certificates will be distributed soon after the race, according to a SDAT press release.
Handball trials

The Tamil Nadu Handball Association will hold trials at the Anna Stadium in Tiruchi on September 11 (10 a.m.).

Players born after January 2, 1988, are eligible and they should bring age-proof and two passport sizes photographs. For further details contact 94441-79166.

Those selected will take part in the National junior boys’ championship to be held at Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, from September 21 to 26.
