Tania emerges sole leader

NEW DELHI: Woman Grandmaster Tania Sachdev defeated Vietnam’s Le Thanh Tu to emerge as the sole leader after the third round of the Asian women chess championship at Teheran on Wednesday.

On a day when all six Indians remained undefeated, Tania’s 53-move victory with white pieces raised her tally to three points. Nisha Mohota drew with fancied Chinese Huang Qian to share the second spot with four others at 2.5 points.

Former National champion Aarthie Ramaswamy was involved in her third straight draw after facing China’s Wang Yu. Six more rounds remain in the competition.

The results (third round, Indians): Huang Qian (Chn, 2.5) drew with Nisha Mohota (Chn, 2.5); Tania Sachdev (3) bt Le Thanh Tu (Vie, 2); Aarthie Ramaswamy (1.5) drew with Wang Yu (Chn, 1.5); Eesha Karavade (1.5) drew with Tan Zhongyi (C hn, 1.5); Zhang Xiaowen (1.5) drew with Swati Ghate (1.5); Amruta Mokal (1) drew with Shayesteh Ghaderpour (Iri, 1.5).
