Tiruvattar bandh paralyses normal life
P. Sudhakar
NAGERCOIL: The 12-hour bandh called by the Tiruvattar Assembly Constituency Retrieval Committee in protest against the elimination of the segment in the delimitation exercise paralysed normal life in the constituency on Friday.
The committee, comprising members of all political parties, was formed recently after the Tiruvattar constituency was abolished in the delimitation process.
When the committee appealed to the public to observe the bandh on September 7 in all places under the Tiruvattar Assembly constituency, the request evoked good response. All business establishments at Tiruvattar, Saamiyarmadam, Vaerkilambi, Aattur, Melpuram, Arumanai, Maanjaalumoodu, Kulasekaram, Maruthancode, Vellancode, Mulucode, Eraviputhurkadai and Azhagiyamandapam downed shutters and educational institutions at Tiruvattar remained closed, owing to absence of students.
No vehicle, including Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses and autorickshaws, could be seen on the road.
Elaborate security arrangements were made in view of the protest.
