TIRUPATTUR: Tirupattur Civil Supplies Corporation officials have seized 277 bags of rice smuggled from Vellore at Tagarakuppam check post in Natrampalli near here on Wednesday night.
Civil Supplies Corporation officials said the total value of the smuggled rice was over 14 tonnes. The ration rice was being smuggled from Vellore to Malanoor in Andhra Pradesh. The vehicle in which the rice was smuggled was stranded at the Tagarakuppam check post due to clutch failure.
P.Madhikumar, Taluk Supply Officer (TSO), Tirupattur Civil Supplies Corporation, said that he and his department Revenue Inspector (RI) V.D.Nagalingam seized the smuggled rice bags. Before the two officers reached the spot the driver of the lorry managed to escape. The lorry had been towed to the Tirupattur Taluk Police Station.
