‘Initiate steps to remove encroachments’

Be prepared to face North East Monsoon: Collector

SALEM: The district administration has instructed the revenue officials to initiate steps to remove the encroachments, if any, in channels and tanks within September 15.

Measures

Participating at a meeting organised to discuss the precautionary measures to be taken up prior to the North East Monsoon here on Thursday, Collector N. Mathivanan said that officials of all the departments should be fully prepared to face unfavourable, challenging situation, if any, during the ensuing monsoon.

He asked them to check all the channels and remove encroachments, if any, to ensure free flow of rainwater.

He directed the Public Works department officials to strengthen the bunds of tanks and ponds in the district. All materials required to repair the breaches should be stocked in adequate quantity to meet any eventuality.

The officials should alert the people living on the banks of rivers and in the low-level areas at the time of heavy floods and evacuate them immediately.

Schools should be thrown open to shelter people evacuated from the flood-hit areas, the Collector said.

The district supply and cooperative officials should keep sufficient stock of food grains and essential commodities.

Besides taking efforts to curtail the outbreak of any water-borne diseases, health officials should stock adequate quantity of all essential drugs. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials should restore the damages to transformers and power cables immediately, he said.

The Police and Fire and Rescue services personnel should remain alert and carry out relief operations in the event of floods.

The Collector also asked the District Rural Development Agency and Mahalir Thittam officials to create awareness among self-help group members about disaster management. He called upon the non-Governmental organisations to extend their support during the flood relief operations.

District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam, District Rural Development Agency Project officer D. Jagannathan and senior officials were present.
