Seminar held on the role of youth in combating the disease

Awareness among people stressed

Break the silence, students told

Kakinada: The dreaded HIV and AIDS was spreading at an alarming pace and the life span of people has already been curtailed by 13 years, according to Kutikuppala Surya Rao, member, Global Health Council, USA, and Fellow in HIV medicine, Christian Medical College, Vellore.

Participating as chief guest in the seminar on ‘the role of youth in controlling AIDS in the present scenario’ at the A.S. Government Women’s College here on Thursday evening, Dr. Surya Rao said there were no shortcuts in dealing with the killer disease and prevention was the only remedy. Though it was a manageable disease, he said, there should not be any complacency and everyone should strive to control the spread of the disease by creating proper awareness among people on the precautions to be taken.

Free drugs

While giving a power-point presentation, Dr. Surya Rao explained how millions of people were infected and shortlived because of HIV and AIDS all over the world especially in countries like South Africa. He said the younger generations were the most affected. On the fate of those infected by the disease, Dr. Surya Rao advised them not to get disheartened as their longevity of life could be increased by disciplined life and regular medication. He said the government was making available the anti-retroviral drugs to them free of coast at the selected hospitals.

M.S. Mahesh, field publicity officer, Kakinada unit, who presided, called upon students and parents to break the silence and interact frankly on the adverse effects of AIDS and the precautions to be taken. Moka Pavan Kumar, district AIDS control nodal officer, who was the guest of honour, said women’s role was pivotal in prevention of the spread of AIDS and also in achieving self-reliance and economic empowerment.
