NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Friday issued a production warrant for underworld don Abu Salem, who is currently lodged in the Arthur Road Jail of Mumbai, in connection with an extortion case registered here five years ago.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjeev Jain issued the warrant directing the Arthur Road Jail authorities to produce the accused before him on September 27.
Salem has been charged with attempt to extort and criminal intimidation by the Special Cell of the Delhi police. Businessman Rajat Nagrath had lodged a complaint with the Special Cell in 2002 following which a case was registered. Salem, who was then based in Dubai, had allegedly with the help of his accomplices Ishtiyaq Ahmed and Chander Prakash, threatened Mr. Nagrath of dire consequences if he did not pay up Rs.1 crore.
The underworld don, who was extradited from Portugal in November 2005, is wanted in nearly half-a-dozen cases in Delhi. The Special Cell has also booked him under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for allegedly running an extortion racket.
