Chennai: Neel Metal Fanalca (NMF), the firm in charge of garbage clearance in three zones in the city, has started training workers to clean roads.
The firm took over clearance of garbage in the Ice House, Kodambakkam and Adyar zones on August 25 but faced a shortage of manpower and equipment. Also, workers had not been trained in sweeping roads and clearing garbage.
NMF vice-president S. Pattabhiraman said the company now had about 1,300 workers including sweepers, helpers and drivers. The sweepers are being trained on a service lane of the Marina beach. The company, which had outsourced recruitment of labour, has now decided to hire workers directly to improve retention.
The first batch of the 3,700 bins promised by the firm has arrived.
About 100 bins (660 litres capacity each) have been placed along roads in Mylapore and Gopalapuram. More bins are on their way from Bangkok.
The Chennai Corporation and CES Onyx, the previous contractor, have also provided bins to meet the demand till the full consignment arrives.
Two compactor trucks out of the 32 ordered by the NMF have arrived.
The Chennai Corporation and the NMF are now clearing garbage using hired trucks.
