Tuticorin: The Minister for Animal Husbandry, P. Geetha Jeevan, launched free transport scheme for pregnant women from rural areas in the district, here on Thursday.
S. Uma, Deputy Director of Health Services, said that the scheme was mooted by the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine under National Rural Health Mission. Women in labour pain would be transported from their home to the nearest Primary Health Centre and back to home after the delivery.
“The aim is to promote ‘institutional delivery’ and thereby bring down infant mortality rate and maternal mortality ratio,” she said. Under the scheme, special identity cards would be issued to women during the seventh month of pregnancy. As soon as the labour pain starts, the card holder should seek the service of the ambulance by contacting the referral control room at the District Headquarters Hospital at Kovilpatti. (Telephone numbers: 1056 and 04632-224040 / 225448).
