dated September 8, 1957: C.K. Nayudu’s suggestion

Government control of sport is an absolute necessity, said Col. C.K. Nayudu, the veteran cricketer, in an interview in New Delhi on September 6. “Nothing short of a Ministry of Sport can put our sport on the map of the world. A new set of people at the Government level, genuinely interested in sport, should take coaching to our schools. A Ministry of Sport is the only cure for our deteriorating standards. It should take over sport and spend a certain amount of money for the sake of India’s health and sport. Even our hockey supremacy is slipping. It was a fluke one-goal victory at Melbourne. All this has to be set right. India has talent in abundance. It only needs proper nursing.” Welcoming the idea of holding the Ranji Trophy matches on a league basis, he said, “This is a move in the right direction. Our players must have more competitive matches similar to the county matches in England and the Sheffield Shield series in Australia.”
