LUCKNOW: Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday banned student union elections in all universities, including associated degree colleges, in U.P. In a statement, she said apart from disturbing the academic atmosphere, the elections created law and order problems. During her last regime, Ms. Mayawati fixed an age limit for contestants. Consequently, elections were not held in Lucknow University as all candidates had crossed the age limit. When Mr. Mulayam Singh became Chief Minister, he removed the age limit and polls were held in 2003. In December last, the university witnessed student unrest over implementation of the Lyngdoh committee report. Elections were not held in the last academic session as almost all contestants were among students expelled or suspended.
