NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday sought replies from the Centre and Rajasthan Government on a petition seeking a CBI probe into the allegation of illegal sale of firearms and grant of licence for weapons without proper verification in Sri Ganganagar district bordering Pakistan.
A Bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice R.V. Raveendran issued notices to both Home and Defence Ministries and the State Government on the petition alleging that unchecked sale and issuance of arms licence was a cause of concern for the nation when terrorist activities were on the rise.
The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Arvind Kumar Sharma said an enquiry for the period 2002-06 by the District Collector of Sri Ganganagar district in Rajasthan had revealed sale of prohibited weapons obtained by the Army Personnel through the Central Ordnance Depot, Jabalpur.
The weapons prescribed for Army personnel have been sold to general public with criminal records, the PIL claimed.
