Teen-centric: Navdeep and Kajal Sindhu in Chandamama.
Film: Chandamama (Telugu) Cast: Navdeep, Sivabalaji, Kajal Sindhu Director: Krishna Vamsi Chandamama wants to be a classic moronic movie but it’s just too stupid to achieve that goal. It’s the story of four youngsters who sit around and do nothing. Indeed, their biggest decision seems to be whether or not to get married and the synopsis is all about clearing that confusion. The film begins on a very ambitious note and while you think you are on the brink of watching another colourful ‘Murari’ or a feel good ‘Ninne Pelladutha’ , a heavy prelude and a commentary on Ayurveda dashes your hopes and warns you of the journey ahead. Very loud and utterly out of step with definitions and dimensions of courtship and romance, the film doesn’t really have much else going for it, though. The script is downright awful at times. Some of the dialogues are so forced and unrealistic, had the script contained lines that actually sounded like what real people would say, the film might have been better. The entire cast had done justice to the roles and amongst them Ahuti Prasad stands out. He is thoroughly impressive. While the first half is breezy, the second half makes the drama a tame, trivial teen-centric torture. The director has let down the cast who have pinned hopes on him. While the direction looks amateurish, the film, aimed at the yuppie generation, might instantly take a liking to it. Songs which are usually the director’s forte falters, the antakshari number is utterly feeble. ‘Chandamama’ is just a simple, silly light hearted film that many will find merry, mindless fun, and yes there are a couple of gay jokes too which the director bravely attempted and one will not fail to notice. The truth, however, is that there is very little enjoyment in this rancid raw cookie dough of a movie. Y. SUNITA CHOWDHARY
