CPI defeats CPI(M) in by-election

VICTORIOUS: Celebration of CPI members in Tirupur on Friday.

TIRUPUR: The Communist Party of India candidate S. Velusamy has won the by-election held for the post of 19th wardcouncillor of Tirupur Municipality by pushing the Communist Party of India(Marxist) town secretary N. Gopalakrishnan to third place.

Of the total 1,919 votes, Mr. Velusamy secured 793 and an independent candidate S. Govindasamy got 432.

While Mr. Gopalakrishnan secured 382 votes, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam’s S. Rathnaprkash got 294.

EVMs used

Results were declared on Friday and electronic voting machines were used in the election for the first time in local body polls.

As a DPA candidate, Mr. Gopalakrishnan had lost in the same ward in last year’s general elections.
