Tiruchi braces up for flood

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: The district administration was fully geared up to meet any exigency during the North-East monsoon, the Collector, Ashish Vachhani, has said.

About one lakh sandbags have been kept ready by the Public Works Department. All Panchayat Union offices have also been asked to stock sand bags so that they could be quickly moved in case of breaches in water bodies.

Speaking at a consultative meeting to discuss precautionary measures to be taken in view of the onset of monsoon, here on Wednesday, Mr.Vachhani instructed the PWD, Revenue and Development Department officials to maintain a close vigil on tanks and river banks. Measures should be taken to prevent breaches in vulnerable spots of bunds.

“Monitor rain level”

Special attention should be paid to areas which were affected during the 2005-floods. Officials have also been asked to monitor the rainfall level in neighbouring Pudukottai and Karur districts, as the rain waters from these two districts drain in Tiruchi. A daily rainfall report should be submitted to the Collector.

He also instructed the officials to conduct taluk and block-level coordination meetings on disaster management. Revenue Divisional Officers, Tahsildars, Block Development Officers and Corporation officials have been asked to identify low-lying areas which are vulnerable for inundation. The services of the Territorial Army, based in the city, could be requisitioned, he said.

The District Revenue Officer, A. Nambirajan; the Corporation Commissioner, B. Balachandran and the Commanding Officer of the Territorial Army, Col. A.P. Johnattended the meeting.
