Indian, American universities urged to work together

CHENNAI: David T. Hopper, Consul-General of the American Consulate, has underscored the importance of establishing linkages between American and Indian Universities.
Delivering the first convocation address of the Meenakshi University here on Friday, Mr. Hopper said such linkages between centres of excellence would be mutually beneficial in furthering the cause of education. He dwelt at length on how Indian Americans played a vital role in building the U.S. economy.
Pointing out that education was the key to success, Mr. Hopper urged the young graduates and postgraduates to continue their pursuit of education.
State Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy presented 15 medals for academic excellence to candidates from faculties of dental, nursing, physiotherapy and health sciences.
State Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, who awarded the degrees, complimented the Meenakshi Ammal Dental College for being a centre of excellence and a model dental college with an ‘A’ grade accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India, an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission.
A.N. Radhakrishnan, Chancellor, Meenakshi University, conferred the Doctoral degree of honoris causa on Prof. Herman F. Sailer for his contribution to the field of dentistry and medicine and on Erica Brigitte Schwob for her humanitarian activities.
The Registrar of Academic activities, Sivapathasundharam, highlighted the various achievements and research projects undertaken by the University.
E. Munirathnam Naidu, Vice-Chancellor, said Meenakshi University was not merely a centre for acquisition of knowledge but was also a centre for putting knowledge to its right use — for the betterment of society and humanity.
