UNPA: why not all-party mechanism?
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The United National Progressive Alliance on Friday distanced itself from the National Democratic Alliance’s demand for a joint parliamentary committee on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, and suggested that an all-party mechanism be put in place instead.
Briefing journalists here, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh said: “They [NDA] are insisting on a JPC but we are saying that if a JPC is not possible, then the government should consider some other mechanism to take on board the views of political parties.”
The UNPA had no quarrel with the decision to set up a United Progressive Alliance-Left committee. “Our contention is that the deal is not the private affair of one set of parties but a national issue in which every political party should be allowed a say. By all means, the ruling combination can have its own consultation mechanism for allies and supporting parties. But, there should be another mechanism for every political party to present its view.”
On Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi’s charge that the NDA was stalling proceedings at the behest of a Chennai-based party, Mr. Singh said: “The current stalemate is being orchestrated by the NDA and the UPA as both want to avoid embarrassment. The BJP wants to avoid a discussion on the Sachar Committee report as it would bring up the Srikrishna report on the 1993 Mumbai riots, and the Congress is shying away from any mention of ‘Uncle Quattrocchi,’ now that its hand in his leaving Argentina has become clear.”
