Thiruvananthapuram: The State-owned Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) will launch a new brand of budget hotels under the name, ‘Tamarind KTDC Easy Hotel’ as part of efforts to offer premium services. The branding exercise has been taken up by KTDC to offer travellers the very best options to experience God’s Own Country’s unmatched hospitality and natural attractions. A standardised and attractive menu, modern facilities, better ambience, affordable room rates and linkage to tourist attractions await tourists in the budget hotels of KTDC which are to be branded. The first ‘Tamarind Easy Hotel’ will be inaugurated at Tirunelli by the Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on September 15. The corporation zeroed in on the name ‘Tamarind’ for its association with shelter, as the tree was once part of every household providing cool, refreshing shade for travellers, according to KTDC Chairman Cherian Philip. Further, tamarind is a vital ingredient in Indian cuisine. At present, KTDC has budget hotels in Kannur, Thrissur, Manarcaud, Guruvayur, Alappuzha, Kollam, Changanacherry and Peeremedu. All these eight budget hotels will be upgraded and christened as Tamarind. The corporation will set up new ones at Kondotty, Kalady, Mangattuparambu, Sulthan Bathery, Nilambur and Devikulam. KTDC Managing Director K.G. Mohnalal said the exercise was part of the efforts to brand the motels and Yatri Nivas owned by the corporation in the State. “The exercise will enable the corporation to make available an additional 350 rooms in the State for tourists. It will increase the turnover of the corporation,” he said. Further, the corporation will also be able to ensure brand compatibility. The guests staying in premium properties of KTDC will now be able to check into the branded properties of the corporation in other tourist destinations, he said. As part of improving the facilities and to provide better service, the KTDC has started training the 700-odd personnel right from helpers to managers. The corporation has set up a modern training centre at its corporate office in the capital.
