PUDUCHERRY: Madras High Court Judge Justice P.K. Misra on Saturday urged people to come forward to register their marriages. “If a marriage is challenged after many years, if would be difficult to prove that it existed without a valid certificate. The courts need proper legal proof,” he said. He was speaking at a function to distribute marriage registration certificates to about 71 couples. Justice Misra, who is also the Executive Chairman of the Union Territory of Puducherry Legal Services Authority (UTPLSA). He said that the Supreme Court had, in 2006, asked the State Governments and Union Territories to amend their rules so as to make registration compulsory. But many had not done so as yet. D. Ramabathiran, District Judge and Member Secretary, UTPLSA, said the authority had launched a special drive for registration of marriages, in coordination with various residents associations in and around Puducherry. Around 200 registrations had been processed as of now, he said.
