Mayawati Government described as anti-farmer

LUCKNOW: The Bharatiya Janata Party will launch an agitation against the Bahujan Samaj Party-led government in Uttar Pradesh demanding payment of sugarcane dues amounting to Rs 1,947 crore to farmers across the State.

BJP State unit president Ramapati Ram Tripathi said here over the weekend that the party workers would stage a dharna at the gates of the defaulter sugar mills from September 15 to 20. Mr. Tripathi warned the Mayawati Government that if the dues were not paid by September 20, the agitation would be extended to the tehsils.

This phase of the agitation would extend till September 30, the BJP state unit chief said, adding that the stir would be staged at the district headquarters in the first week of September.

Describing the Mayawati Government as anti-farmer and anti-people, Mr. Tripathi said the law and order situation had deteriorated. He accused the Chief Minister of undermining democratic institutions and charged her with minority appeasement.

Asserting that only the BJP was capable of taking on the BSP Government, Mr. Tripathi said the Samajwadi Party was incapable of facing the Mayawati Government as both were two sides of the same coin.

No division in the party

Mr. Tripathi denied that the top State party leaders such as Kalyan Singh, Kalraj Mishra, Lalji Tandon and Surya Pratap Shahi had not welcomed his nomination as the UP BJP president. He claimed that there were no divisions in the party. However, at his press conference, his first after taking over the new responsibility, these leaders were conspicuous by their absence.

Even his predecessor, Kesari Nath Tripathi, was absent. BJP Legislature Party leader Om Prakash Singh was the only senior leader present.

Divisions in the party were evident when Mr. Tripathi came to Lucknow from Delhi to assume his charge on Wednesday. None of the senior leaders was present to welcome him.
