Setting an example: A sweet shop owner distributing clay Ganesha idols free of cost at Kukatpally in Hyderabad on Saturday.
HYDERABAD: Just like any other year, Vinayaka Chathurthi promises customer-friendly offers from innovative traders. But possibly, the sweetest of them all will be when people walk-in to buy sweets and find themselves receiving an eco-friendly Ganesha idol free of cost. Promoting usage of eco-friendly Ganesha idols, Emerald Mithai Shop at Indira Park and its new branch at Kukatpally Housing Board is distributing 10-inch high clay Ganesha idols. These idols are sourced specially from Machilipatnam and are already drawing the attention of children. Create awareness
The idea is to create awareness on the importance of using clay idols instead of those with oil and chemical colours. Every year, thousands of idols are immersed in Hussain Sagar, polluting the waters. “We are doing our bit to conserve the lake and to promote environmental awareness,” said Emerald Mithai Shop, managing director, M. Vijayaram. Already over 500 hundred idols have been distributed and the management expects to distribute over 2,500 idols by the time the festival of Vinayaka Chathurthi arrives. What more, it will take care of immersion too, with rituals. All one needs to do is bring the idols to the Emerald Mithai Shop (both branches) for ‘nimmajjanam’. Paper and jute bags
“We give priority to environment and eco-friendly products. We use paper and jute bags to pack our sweets,” says Mr. Vijayaram. Not confining to distributing clay Ganeshas, the shop management is also fixing posters on environmental awareness at hotels, schools, residential apartments and such locations in and around Kukatpally Housing Board and Lower Tank Bund.
