Probe into tribal “attack”

Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD: Inspector-General of Police (Surat range) Shivanand Jha has ordered an inquiry into Wednesday’s incident at Haripura in the Umarpada-Sagbara forest range in south Gujarat in which tribals allegedly “attacked” forest and police personnel. The police have registered cases against 130 tribals on charges of loot, attempt to murder and rioting.

About 2,000 tribals, armed with bows and arrows, had launched a guerilla warfare to “prevent” the forest staff from destroying their standing crops.

Ambarish Rai, convener of the Surat-based Lok Sangharsha Morcha said it was a clear attempt to dispossess the tribals of their only source of livelihood.
