SALEM: The Salem Corporation has decided to hand over the renovation and maintenance of two public parks to the residents’ welfare associations (RWA). The proposals submitted by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board Residents Welfare Association (Kandampatti East) and Sona Nagar Residents Welfare Association to maintain two parks in their area have been approved at the Corporation council meeting held recently. The civic body has also initiated steps to invite more associations and voluntary organisations to take up the renovation, beautification and maintenance of public parks and traffic islands in the city as a part of the Beautification of Salem project, officials said. The Corporation was not able to maintain the public parks and traffic island properly due to manpower shortage. As a result a number of parks and traffic islands in the city remain in a state of neglect. Most of the public parks in the city are characterised by withered lawns, overgrown shrubs and plastic bags. Except for a few traffic island maintained by the private establishments, others also remain in bad shape. While hearing the public views on the Beautification of Salem project, a number of residents expressed their concern over the bad condition of the public parks and traffic islands. They suggested the Corporation to handover the beautification and maintenance of parks and traffic islands to RWAs, voluntary organisations.
