negligent ACT: The Gandhi statue along with the mandapam was pulled down by a tractor-trailer at Villupuram on Saturday.
VILLUPURAM: Villupuram Municipal Chairman K. Janakaraj has promised to take measures to install a new Gandhi statue at the same place where the old one was pulled down by a tractor-trailer on Saturday. Town Congress Committee secretary M.D.Ghulam Mohideen has appealed to the Chairman to erect the statue before October 2. The 37-year-old Gandhi statue installed in the heart of the town, at the Villupuram-Puducherry road and Thiru Vi.Ka road junction, was smashed into pieces owing to the negligence of a tractor-trailer driver Nandan (45) who has since been arrested. The six-foot high statue along with the dome and the supporting pillars came crashing down when a protruding wooden log, supporting the sugarcane load in the tractor-trailer, got entangled with the mandapam and the driver raced the vehicle without realising the consequences.
