Puducherry
Special Correspondent,
PUDUCHERRY: A total of five trade unions have decided to stage a protest demonstration before the Assembly on Monday protesting against Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy’s stand that the Government would not procure handloom products from the PONTEX for free distribution to people below the poverty line. General secretary of the Puducherry unit of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) V.S.Abishekam said here on Sunday that leaders of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Coordination Committee of Trade Unions (AICCTU), Anna Thozhirchanga Peravai (ATP), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF) and the AITUC, who participated in a meeting, unanimously decided to intensify the agitation against attempts to procure polyester sarees and lungis from private agencies for the free distribution scheme. Strongly flaying Mr. Kandasamy’s remark that the quality of the handloom material supplied by the PONTEX was not good, the unions said the future of the handlooms sector and welfare of the weavers would become a big question mark if the Government decided to purchase polyester clothe. Token strike
The weavers in Nettapakkam, Kathirkamam, Meenakshipet, Lawspet, Karuvadikuppam, Muthialpet, Muthia Mudaliarpet and Solaithandavankuppam would observe a token strike on Monday, Mr.Abishekam said. After staging a protest, leaders of the weavers’ unions would present a memorandum to Mr. Kandasamy asking him to withdraw his remarks against the PONTEX products, he added.
