Chittaurgarh gets literacy award

Special Correspondent

President Pratibha Patil

JAIPUR: President Pratibha Patil on Saturday gave away this year’s Satyen Maitra memorial literacy award to Chittaurgarh district of Rajasthan in recognition of its achievement of targets and launching of new initiatives in the field of continuing education.

Chittaurgarh Collector P.L. Agrawal received the award from Ms. Patil at a function marking the International Literacy Day at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, Minister of State Mohammed Ali Ashraf Fatmi, and UNESCO representative Nia Jung were present on the occasion.

The administration in Chittaurgarh executed various literacy projects under a convergence plan with the public-private partnership that led to excellent arrangements for computer education at 50 Continuing Education Centres and helped in holding special camps for professional and women’s education. While 2,800 women benefited from the camps, seven villages achieved total literacy following these initiatives.

An official release stated here that the factors such as villagers’ association with the knowledge centre drive, their active participation in Jal Chetana Yatra, Kisan Mahotsava and Total Sanitation Campaign, and capacity enhancement through the literacy work were taken into account while selecting the district for the prestigious national-level award.

The release pointed out that Panchayati Raj institutions, non-Government organisations, industrial houses and elected representatives played a significant role in improving the literacy rate in the remote areas.

The village-level literacy committees appointed by the district administration especially helped in the achievement by managing the Continuing Education Centres efficiently. The trainers also helped in generating awareness about literacy-related issues among villagers.
