This Day That Age
M.J. Anderson, 22-year-old unseeded Australian, won the men’s singles title and Miss Althea Gibson (US) the women’s crown in the US lawn tennis championships in New York on September 8. Anderson beat A. J. Cooper, Australian champion and No. 1 seed, 10-8, 7-5, 6-4. Miss Gibson beat Miss Louise Brough (US), four times Wimbledon champion and a former US title-holder, 6-3, 6-2. Both feats were a first – Miss Gibson the first Negress to win the women’s championship, and Anderson the first unseeded player to gain the men’s title.
