Condemnable

Barely a fortnight after 40 persons died in two bomb blasts in Hyderabad comes the bid on former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Janardhana Reddy’s life in Vidyanagar. The incidents reflect the State government’s continued failure on the security and intelligence fronts. The fact that Nellore is not a Maoist stronghold and yet the naxalites succeeded in carrying out such a big operation proves they are spreading their tentacles. The government should rise above vote-bank politics and crack down on both Islamist terrorists and Maoists. It should also generate employment opportunities in naxalite strongholds and for the Muslim youth. This will erode the support base of the ultras.

The police have been under the wrong impression that with the elimination of some naxal leaders in encounters, the activities of the militants have been brought under control. The latest incident is an indication that the Maoist group is not inclined to give up the fight despite the loss of important leaders. The government, therefore, must evolve some other measures to instil confidence among the people. The security provided to leaders should be professional. A mere increase in the strength of the force will not help.

Mr. Reddy is the second high-profile leader after Chandrababu Naidu to have miraculously escaped an attempt on his life. It is clear that the State government has not taken necessary action to contain the threat posed by naxalites and Islamists. That the real solution to naxalism lies in tackling the social and economic problems (editorial “Vigil against a continuing threat,” Sept. 8) is only partially correct. The lack of political will to rein in the extremists is the main reason for continuing lawlessness.

The ghastly landmine attack brings into sharp focus the police failure to sanitise the routes on which VIPs travel. In a similar blast on the foothills of Tirumala four years ago, when Mr. Naidu’s convoy was targeted, the modus operandi was the same. The mine was placed a few months earlier during repairs on the road. In both cases, the police laxity and complicity of workers, if any, should be investigated.

R. Ramachandra Rao,
Hyderabad
