Letters to the Editor
It is obvious that the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal is unfavourable to India in all aspects. The government has taken refuge behind the rule that the Cabinet’s approval of international agreements holds good under any circumstances. This is not correct. As there is overwhelming opposition to the deal from the ordinary people and experts, it is unacceptable. India should renegotiate the deal limiting the scope to the supply of nuclear light water reactors without any conditions.
P. Srinivasan,
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh considers the signing of the nuclear deal as his outstanding achievement, turning a blind eye to the popular perception. He would do well to remember the talisman prescribed by Mahatma Gandhi — “When in doubt, recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man you have seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him … Will it restore him to a control over his own life and destiny? … will it lead to Swaraj for the hungry and starving millions?”
S.S. Rajagopalan,
