Jamal Mohamed College retains title

Karaikudi: Jamal Mohamed College (Tiruchi) retained the Veerapandian memorial Trophy defeating Annamalai University 1-0 in the final of the third annual State-level inter-collegiate hockey tournament here on Sunday.

Irdayaraj scored the match-winner off a pass from Saravanan in the 17th minute. In the semifinals, a brace each by Saravanan and Mohamed Safiullah helped Jamal Mohamed College trounce Madras Christian College (Chennai) 4-0, while Annamalai University beat Guru Nanak College (Chennai 3-0) with goals from Sudhakar, Samraj and Samuel Niranjan.

Hat-trick by Sarvanan

At Madurai, four goals, including a hat-trick, by Saravanan helped Acme Sports Club defeat P.G. Govindarajan Memorial Football Club 5-2 in the Madurai District Football Association ‘A’ division league for the Hi-Tech Arai Trophy on Sunday. Rajan scored the other goal for Acme. Balamurugan scored both the goals for PG Govindarajan Memorial FC.

Other result: Friends FC (Thirumangalam) 3 (Murugan 2, Kumar) bt Usilai FC 0.

Syed shines

At Dindigul, M. Syed Mohamed’s 85 and a half-century by R. Ganesh Kumar (52) helped Majestic CC defeat RVS SC by 85 runs in the Canara Bank-Dindigul District Cricket Association first division league on Sunday.

The scores: Majestic CC 256 for four in 45 overs (P. Lenin Kumar 40, R. Ganesh Kumar 52, M. Syed Mohamed 85) bt RVS SC 171 in 41.3 overs (P.R. Mohan Kumar 54, R. Chandrasekar four for 47).

NEC posts win

At Tirunelveli, National Engineering College beat Sankar Polytechnic College on better-run rate as rain stopped play in the Canara Bank-Tirunelveli District Cricket Association second division league on Sunday.

The scores: Sankar Polytechnic College 113 for seven in 20 overs (Natesh three for 25) bt National EC 76 for four in 13.2 overs. Rain stopped play. NEC won on better run rate.

SFRC triumphs

At Madurai, Standard Fireworks Rajarathinam College (Sivakasi) emerged winner of the Madurai Kamaraj University women’s championship ball badminton tournament with an all-win record in the four-team league on Saturday.

The results: League: SFRC (Sivakasi) bt LDC (Madurai) 29-22, 29-15; SFRC bt Sri Meenakshi Govt. College 29-7, 29-18; SFRC bt EMG Yadava WC 29-14, 29-8; LDC bt Sri Meenakshi Govt. College 26-29, 29-15, 29-22; LDC bt EMG Yadava WC 29-13, 29-4; Sri Meenakshi Govt. College bt EMG Yadava WC 29-10, 29-10.

SIT wins title

Sethu Institute of Technology (Kariapatti) beat PSNA Engineering College (Dindigul) 25-18, 25-14 and won the title in the Anna University Zone IX inter-engineering college volleyball tournament.

Other results: Third place: Thiagarajar (Madurai) bt Syed Ammal (Ramanathapuram) 25-16, 25-9. Semifinals: SIT (Kariapatti) bt Thiagarajar 25-14, 25-16; PSNA bt Syed Ammal 25-12, 25-13.

At Tirunelveli: Zone X: Final: Arulmigu Kalasalingam (Krishnankovil) bt Dr. Sivanthi Adithavar (Tiruchendur) 12-25, 30-28, 25-18. Third place: St. Xavier’s (Nagercoil) bt Mepco Schlenk (Sivakasi) 25-18, 25-20.

Robinson Park FC wins

At Kumbhakonam, Robinson Park FC (Chennai) won the title in the South-India level veterans football tournament.

Robinson Park defeated Periyar Nagar (Bangalore) by spin of the coin in the final. Both the teams were deadlocked 0-0 in the allotted time. With the score remaining 5-5 after tiebreaker and 11-11 after sudden death, the spin of the coin method was employed.

The results: Semifinal: Robinson Park 1 (Thangadurai) bt Neyveli Veterans 0; Periyar Nagar 1 (Babu) bt AD Veterans 0.

Alaguraja wins

M.K. Alaguraja of Madurai, with five points, at the end of the fifth and final round won the title at the State-level chess tournamenton Sunday.
