NEW DELHI: In a hit-and-run case, a speeding Toyota Corolla car hit a Delhi police traffic constable near Boat Club here on Saturday night and vanished from the scene. The constable has been admitted to Lohia Hospital with serious injuries. The incident took place around midnight when Constable Vinod Sharma, 40, along with the area traffic inspector and his staff was on duty near the Boat Club. While the traffic inspector was issuing a challan, Vinod saw a speeding Toyota Corolla taking a right turn on Rajpath towards Rafi Marg. As right turn is not allowed at the crossing, Constable Vinod waved at the driver to stop. But the driver pressed on the accelerator, knocking down the constable. Before the other traffic police personnel could gather their wits, the vehicle had vanished. Vinod, who sustained injuries in the head and other parts of the body, was rushed to Lohia Hospital where he was operated upon on Sunday. “We are trying to record his statement to find out how the incident took place and whether he remembers the registration number of the vehicle that hit him,” said a police officer. Immediately after the incident, a message was flashed through the Police Control Room to trace the white Toyota Corolla involved in the hit-and-run accident. Shortly afterwards, a PCR van zeroed in on one such vehicle parked near Shastri Bhawan in which some young men were partaking of their dinner. The police interrogated them, but let them off later as their involvement was not established. The police have registered a case and are examining the footage of closed-circuit television cameras installed in the high-security area for clues.
