BHUBANESWAR: Before the crucial academic council meeting of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Industry Secretary Ashok Dalwai said if the ‘year back system’ was withdrawn, the quality of education in private engineering colleges would then erode. While talking to a private television channel, Mr. Dalwai said the academic council would discuss the matter in detail and take a rational approach. The academic council was scheduled to meet on September 14. Meanwhile, members of the Orissa Private Engineering College Association (OPECA) met here on Sunday to chalk out their strategy for the important meeting. What is the year back system all about? The BPUT allows students to get promoted from first year to second year even he or she fails to clear four out of 12 subjects. Promotion from second year to third year is allowed even if one fails to clear 5 out of 24 subjects in the first two years. Similarly, BPUT can at best permit failure up to five subjects in second and third as well as clearing the first year subjects for promoting a student from third year to fourth year. For receiving the degree at the end of four years, one has to clear all subjects. Additional chances are provided to clear any backlog. According to sources, 13,800 students had taken admission in 2006-2007 academic session. Of them, only 3,500 students were able to succeed while the rest had to appear for supplementary examination.
