BHUBANESWAR: The government has made elaborate security arrangements to maintain law and order during the day-long Opposition-sponsored bandh on Monday. Adequate security arrangements had already been made at various government offices, commercial areas and highways to maintain peace during the bandh, official sources said on Sunday evening. The State Government also announced that all government and private schools, colleges and universities would remain closed on Monday to save students from inconvenience. The main opposition party Congress as well as the CPI(M) and the CPI announced to observe the dawn to dusk bandh to protest against the deteriorating law and order situation, cholera deaths in tribal-dominated districts of Koraput, Rayagada and Kalahandi, fake medicine trade and female foeticide. Although the opposition parties have announced that the bandh would be observed in a peaceful manner, they appealed to people to make it a success. The opposition parties also requested the people not to undertake journeys by train or road as vehicular traffic and trains would be stopped by them at various locations to enforce the bandh. In Bhubaneswar, tight security arrangements had been made around the State Secretariat and other major government buildings. Mobile squads were kept ready to to maintain law and order, Deputy Inspector-General Y.B. Khurania said. The police appealed to the opposition parties to make their workers behave in a responsible manner while enforcing the bandh.
