Bridging the gap: Panachamoottil Kadavu on the banks of the Manimala at Venpala in Thiruvalla taluk where the proposed Rs.2.32-crore bridge is to be constructed.

PATHANAMTHITTA: The long-pending plea for a bridge across the Manimala river at Panachamoottil Kadvau in Thiruvalla Taluk got a boost with the local body as well as the official machinery launching the land acquisition drive for constructing approach roads to the proposed bridge on either banks of the river.

As many as 12 local residents have come forward offering land for the approach roads free of cost. They have already submitted their land surrender documents, according to panchayat president E.G. Omanakutty Amma.

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has accorded administrative sanction for the proposed bridge, which will cost Rs.2.32 crore according to an estimate made in May. However, the Public Works Department has not yet submitted the detailed estimate for the bridge to NABARD, delaying its final clearance.

Official sources said the detailed estimate of the proposed bridge should be submitted to NABARD before September 30.

The proposed 90-metre long, 8.4-metre wide, concrete bridge at Panachamoottil kadavu will be mainly beneficial to the people in the Thiruvanvandoor, Kuttoor, and Nedumpram panchayats, situated south-west of Thiruvalla municipality, says Mr. Joe Elanjimotil, panchayat member.

He said an expert team from the Lal Bahadur Sastri Institute of Science and Technology in Thiruvananthapuram would soon conduct the mandatory soil test in the area on the basis of a NABARD direction in this regard.
