15,000-20,000 police personnel to be recruited

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: About 15,000 to 20,000 police personnel will be recruited in all districts and the Commissionerates of Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam in three batches over the next two to three years.

The guidelines for recruitment to be taken up on the merits of efficiency, performance and technical knowledge will be finalised at a high-level meeting, most likely on Friday, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said.

He announced the decision while discussing the recent landmine attack on former Chief Minister N. Janardhana Reddy with senior officials prior to his departure to Karimnagar and Medak districts on Sunday, a release said.

Jobs for youth

Dr. Reddy said the recruitment will supplement the State Government’s programme to generate employment for youth. The Government had already provided jobs to over two lakh youth in public and private sectors. The latest recruitment in the Police Department would not only further the programme but strengthen maintenance of law and order. The Government would not compromise on law and order front under any circumstances, he added.

The Chief Minister noted that the strength of the police force in the State had not gone up in the last four decades despite a substantial increase in population. There were about only about 85,000 police personnel. There was acute need to step up recruitment of the force in tune with the demand. He said no Government could remain silent to the violence of Maoists.

The current Congress regime was no exception. The Governments of the day worked for the welfare of people while the naxalites believed in violence. The Government will check violence with people’s support.
