CHENNAI: Splashes of colour decked large white sheets of paper in which tigers, giraffes, crocodiles and deer gambolled in forests. The tigers were most prominent. The students, it seemed, were fascinated with the nation’s national animal.
Displayed at the Bhavan’s Rajaji School at Kilpauk here on Sunday, the paintings were by 82 students who had taken part in an on-the-spot drawing competition organised by the wildlife division of the Forest Department to celebrate wildlife week.
The students, who were given three hours to complete their work, were painting on the theme ‘Varieties of wildlife’. The competition was held at eight centres across the city and around 900 students participated.
“The main idea behind the competitions is to create awareness of wildlife and nature among children,” Ashish Kumar Srivastava, city’s wildlife warden, said.
Six categories
The competition was held in six categories — kindergarten students, students of the first to fifth standards, sixth to eighth, ninth to twelfth, college students and the physically-challenged. Three paintings would be selected from each category. The prizes for the district and State-level toppers would be awarded on October 2, Mr. Srivastava said.
