CHENNAI: Ethical values must not be compromised for the economic development of the society, said chairman and managing director of Bank of India T. S. Narayanasami here on Sunday. He was participating in the valedictory of the diamond jubilee celebrations of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, Mylapore. Mr. Narayanasami, who is an alumnus of the college, said the institution upheld the indomitable spirit of value-based education. Pointing out that degeneration of ethical values was a matter of concern, he said students must practise ideals imbibed in the college. Bank’s support
He also extended support on behalf of his bank to the launch of a course in banking being planned by the college. President of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, Gautamananda stressed the need for spirit of sacrifice among youngsters to reach out to the rural poor. Students must carry forward the best education they received to remote villages, which was the vision of Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda’s letter quoted He also quoted a letter written by Swami Vivekananda in 1894, which had a reference to starting of a college in Chennai and his mission to organise young people for building the nation. The secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Visakhapatnam, Amritananda, said the dedication of the teachers and enthusiasm of students despite changes in the society over the years contributed to the progress of the college. Noting that fundamental approach had taken a backseat in education, he said that students must be encouraged to think afresh instead of concentrating only on good scores.
