POLLACHI: Three town panchayat chairpersons and four village panchayat presidents on Sunday strongly protested against the move of the Delimitation Commission incorporating some of the areas close to Pollachi in Udumalpet and Valaparai (reserve) Assembly constituencies. The meeting presided over by vice-chairman of Pollachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry N.G. Ramasamy decided to hold a slew of protests including resignation of the posts and boycotting the polls. The meeting was attended by the chairpersons of town panchayats, Lingammal (Samathur), S. Mangaiyarkarasi (Jameen Uthukuli) and Chandramohan (Suleswaranpatty) and several village panchayat chiefs. A resolution was passed saying that the decision of commission incorporating Samathur, Jameen Uthukuli and Suleswaranpatty and Jameen Kottampatty village panchayat into Udumalpet constituency, which is far away and Naickenpalayam, Vakkampalayam and Ambarampalayam village panchayats with Valparai constituency was unacceptable. Emergency meetings of these local bodies would be called for in a couple of days and a resolution objecting the move would be passed. Voters’ identity cards of all the 36,000 voters of these areas would be surrendered to the Government and the elected chiefs of these local bodies would resign their posts, the meeting had decided. It urged the Government to take steps to see that all the areas close to Pollachi retained in Pollachi Assembly constituency.
